Named an ‘Unmissable Off-Site Exhibition in Venice’ by Frieze, Jim Dine: Dog on the Forge continues to garner rave reviews.

Press coverage has been enthusiastic, celebrating the ambitious scope and complexity of Jim’s work. Publications have highlighted the exhibition’s impressive installation and Jim’s ability to weave personal history with broader cultural narratives.

For those unable to visit in person, a comprehensive catalogue of the exhibition will be published by Editions Steidl, featuring an insightful essay by Curator Gerhard Steidl.

In addition to the good news from Venice, the recently closed exhibition at 125 Newbury received notable praise. The exhibition, Jim Dine: The Sixties, assembled more than a dozen paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by dating from 1959 to 1973—reflecting Jim’s exploration of the poetic force of everyday things.

Jim Dine’s ambitious installation of 32 works of sculpture, paintings and drawings, is part of the Collateral Events of the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere. These tours are presented for journalists, curators, collectors, educators, critics, and advisors.

American painter, sculptor and poet Jim Dine has transformed the Palazzo Rocca Contarini Corfù in an ambitious survey exhibition curated by Gerhard Steidl, Founding Director of the Kunsthaus Göttingen. Jim Dine - Dog on the Forge is a Collateral Event of the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere, curated by Adriano Pedrosa. The exhibition opens to the public on Saturday, 20 April 2024 and runs through 21 July 2024.

What was the inspiration behind the title "Dog on the Forge"?

Jim: It comes from a poem that I wrote. The line struck me as a kind of metaphor for “this old dog on the hot seat,” or “this old dog on the forge,” meaning, you’re gonna be made into something bigger or better, or you’re gonna get fucked over.

My friend, the poetry professor at Yale, Karin Roffman said the poem was like Gertrude Stein’s “Tender Buttons,” which I really loved.

I’m gonna share the poem, because I love it. Here’s the poem…
